Get crafty and try these easy, cheap ideas to keep kids entertained this summer.

Become an Explorer

Help your kids get in touch with their inner insect collector by exploring the expanses of your backyard and gathering different types of species. These simple DIY bug jars will allow them to bring home their discoveries–at least for a few hours!

You’ll Need:
Clear class jar
Fabric
Rubber band

Directions:
Clean out the jar thoroughly for optimal viewing. Hold the fabric over the opening, and seal it down with the elastic band. This will be easy for your kids to open and close when they find their discoveries.

Get Twisted on your Lawn

Take your favorite party game, Twister, outdoors for some good old-fashioned tangled fun. Create your very own set right on your lawn!

You’ll Need:
Lawn Marking Paint/Spray paint
Small bucket
Cardboard
Pencil or pen
Scissors

Directions:
Use bucket as a stencil to outline circle on cardboard. Cut out the circle, and toss away the center. Take spray paint to create twister dots on the lawn accordingly. Make sure to let the paint dry before you to put your right hand on blue!

Beat the Heat with a Homemade Sprinkler

When we need some relief from July’s hot muggy temperatures, don’t be so quick to turn on the air conditioning.  Take an unused two-liter plastic bottle and transform it into an afternoon of fun for you and your family.

You’ll Need:
Empty two-liter plastic bottle
Knife, scissors, or something that will poke through plastic
Hose

Directions:

Empty out the two plastic bottle and poke holes through the base. Make sure they are large enough for the water to come through. Attach the top of the bottle to the nozzle of the hose.  Once attached, toss the bottle and hose over a tree branch so the bottle is suspended in the air. Turn on the water and voila! You’ve created a sprinkler that will occupy your kids and relieve them (and maybe you?) from the summer heat.
